What is Conservation Framing?
When you frame a piece of original art, everything that is done to it should be reversible. This means that anything that adheres to the art should be able to be removed without leaving a trace of its contact. In addition, all materials (mat board, backing, hinges, tape, etc.) should be completely pH-neutral and acid-free. Finally, the glazing (whether glass or plexi) should filter at least 95% of UV rays to prevent the fading of your art. Once a piece of original art has faded or yellowed from the acidic content found in inferior materials, the piece is permanently damaged.
At Framing 4 Artists we use only 100% rag mat board and acid-free backing to ensure that your work never yellows. Our glazing is at least 97% UV filtered, and the higher grades of glass filter up to 99% of UV rays. We use museum-grade hinges, consisting of wheat paste and Japanese rice paper. All materials that come into contact with your art are pH-neutral, so the piece is housed in an environment that will give it the longest life. In short, conservation framing ensures that your art will be around for generations to come.
